Watchmen~ Alan Moore
"As someone living through unprecedented times, I was hoping to find some escapist reading to take my mind off of the world. As a 21 year old, superheroes were near the top of the list. Picking up Alan Moore's Watchmen, then, provided me with a refreshingly honest take on the genre. An incredible story in it's own right, insightful, vivid, philosophical, and most notably believable, the story unfolds over 12 wonderfully inked and connected issues, culminating in a thought-provoking story that challenges the preconceptions of the hero story, whilst providing a semi-detached lense through which society can be held to account."
"I've never considered myself a social person, due to my own introverted tendencies and somewhat sheltered childhood. However, being forced to isolate from the very world you know with only close family, who really weren't always that close at all, for twelve weeks, has somewhat changed my view. Somewhere during the lockdown, after probably three weeks of prolonged boredom, I realised that I missed normality. Not because of what I had then, but because of what I didn't have now. The freedom, the ability to choose to be isolated rather than to be forced, the option to see my friends or cancel on them. Isolation required me to confront the fact that deep down I'm not asocial - I just like to pretend I am. As the world begins to open up again, I am simultaneously excited and anxious at the prospect of reuniting with friends. While I, like many, will be wanting to see them again and gather together to unwind, the lockdown has exposed how little many of us interact when we aren't required to by proximity. And ultimately, that's okay. Lockdown has given me the wake up call of just how easy it is to fall out of touch with people, and as such, the necessity of making sure you don't."
